Sooner than later, Social media will be a tool for transforming the country ~Ogundamisi

Kayode Ogundamisi is an International Relations expert, TV producer, convener of the Liberty Forum, United Kingdom, and a Fellow of the German human rights group, Internationaler Menschenrechtsverein Bremen e.V. With a following of 209,000 on Twitter alone, he tells JESUSEGUN ALAGBE the impact of social media on his career

You are a social commentator, human rights activist and TV producer. How would you describe the impact of social media on your career?

As it does for almost everyone, social media has created both negative and positive impact in everything I do, but mostly positive. Take Facebook and Twitter, for example, it’s a platform for interaction, used mainly by young people, a more vibrant generation. For those of us born in the 60s and for someone like me with a tradition of barricade activism, it is a new and thrilling experience. I joined my first protest at the age of 13 at Agege (Lagos). I am 47 now. Then, we had no social media when we took on different Nigerian military dictators to fight for democratic rule. As a matter of fact, during my days of student unionism, we used to make our stand known to the then autocratic rulers by words of mouth. I recall holding meetings inside mosques in Sokoto and on different hills in Enugu, just to distract the security agents. What I find ironical now is how we were able to mobilise, communicate and carry out very effective mass actions in those days. But today, with all the easy means of communication, so many youths are more divided, mostly ill-informed and easily bought with the smallest of crumbs from the table of the same people who oppress them. Social media is supposed to be a tool for positive change. For me, it is more of a tool to engage, provoke debates, as well as socialise. Most of my TV productions became successful not just because of the quality of the content, but as a result of being able to share them via various social media platforms.

Amnesty International Leave Nigeria Now ~PCC

Progressive Citizens Congress Statement Read at the March to the Embassy of the United States on Friday September 2, 2016.

Amnesty International Leave Nigeria Now

There is apparently a concerted effort to make Nigeria into a failed state and recent events are proof of such plot. Our dear country has battled all manners of insurgency in the north east especially the Boko Haram terror group, which was once an assemblage of ragtag of misguided youths that turned into an international terror organisation within the shortest time possible.

Religious Malpractices and Implication for National Security ~Kolawole Anthony

I always struggle to keep a smirk off my face each time I ruminate over how we often as a people focus on basic things while glossing over the crucial ones. Security, climate change, economy and a host of other hot issues are important but they become basic when viewed from the perspective of crucial issues like religion and healthcare.

Possibly owing to our sensitivities, we tend to take religion for granted. In a world where we now go out of our ways not to cause offence religion and those that take it to fanatical levels become the biggest beneficiaries. For instance, I had waited several times to see public outrage against religion driven violence even when life is lost but we all tend to simply heave our shoulders in a gesture that says ‘it is about religion I don’t want to blaspheme’ as we move on to discuss the next political scandal.

Take the anticorruption crusade for example, it has indicted ex and serving public office holders, politicians, soldiers, media owners and bankers. Nothing has been said of the clergy that to whom the treasury thieves made monetary donations or even built places of worship. It is another way of saying you are above the law once you come by way of religion. I see this license extends even to the freedom to preach hatred, promote extremism and radicalize youths.

In one part of the country I have seen clerics keep youths busy studying scriptures that means they will never get a western education; I another part of the country youths that did get the western education are encouraged to wait for the divine such that they never get to contribute to the economy because they will enter retirement without once picking up paid employment and will remain dependent on society.

This is why I wonder why we must continue to prevaricate in tackling head on a disaster that has already befallen us. This unscriptural reverence for the clergy and the tainted preaching they give to the public gave us Boko Haram that bastardized the Sunni Wahabbi brand of Islam to kill even Muslim; it gave us the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) that convoluted the ideologies of the Shiite sect to send youths on suicide missions; it gave us the child killing outrage of exorcists somewhere in the south; and it is to it we must give credit for the kidnappers and robbers that usually claim they acted on the prompting from their prosperity believing pastors.

The state has taken on Boko Haram once it became clear that religion was just a cover under which some psychos were operating to satisfy their perversion. Society, including the police, is speaking and against those that brand children witches. Kidnappers and robbers meet their waterloo daily whether from security agencies on enraged mobs that is ever willing to dispense jungle justice with petrol soaked tyres for garlands. But we seem to be making excuses for entities like the IMN and other groups that are presently at the stage of indoctrinating and brainwashing followers.

This indoctrination with the attendant militarisation got to a head when members of this sect made an attempt on the life of a serving military chief. It was the climax of a reign of terror that did not get widespread media coverage for some reason or the other. Had the military not subsequently conducted that operation IMN would have by now surpassed Boko Haram in undermining the existence of the Nigerian state. This is because the doctrine its leadership preaches to followers is that of fanatical extremism with hardcore militarisation thrown in to make suicidal fanatics out of youths.

The sect’s reaction in the aftermath of the military operation remains a warning on the threat they pose to Nigeria’s security as a nation and as a secular state. In addition to the treasonable acts they had committed they also reduced Nigeria to a proxy state with the then Iranian Ambassador, Saheed Kozechi threatening destruction for the country.

But for the intervention of nationalistic Nigerians that called the criminal alliance between the Ambassador and IMN to order they would have achieved the agenda of destabilising the country especially given the way they misled sections of the population into thinking that government’s efforts at preventing extremism was rights abuse.

Just months after the December IMN/military clash, as would be expected of hard-line fundamentalists, the sect’s members are at it again by threatening a breach of the peace with a trek that would be classified as criminal in most countries of the world. They are trekking from their heartland in Zaria to Abuja in a development that would potentially pitch them against security operatives. They know this and they have prepared the ground to again play the victim by claiming security agencies plan to attack them.

5 Reasons Instagram Continues to Grow in 2016

Social media platforms come and go just like any other trend. Today I’m going to dive into one of my favorite social media platforms: Instagram.
Let’s start with a brief background on this engine and see how they got to where they are today.
Started on October 6 of 2010, the platform picked up a million users in its first two months and was destined to be a major player from its humble beginnings. In less than a year, they earned their 150th millionth upload. In September of 2011, the company released version 2.0 and less than a week after that announcement, the company announced that they'd reached 10 million users.

7 Ways to Generate More Sales Using LinkedIn

As someone who makes his living teaching professionals how to utilize LinkedIn to generate more business for themselves, I remain convinced that the platform is one of the most exciting - and misunderstood - business opportunities available right now.
For whatever reason, LinkedIn can't seem to shake the notion that it's "only" a place to find a job or hire a new employee.
But as I've learned spending 48 straight months selling products and services on the site, LinkedIn is one of the biggest (and best) opportunities online right now for you to generate oodles of sales leads, add new clients and land new business.

6 Social Media Rules That Will Steer You Clear of Failure

Whether you're playing with sticks in the backyard or building a Twitter presence, the old adage "it’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye" couldn't be more true.
Oh yes dear readers, don't fool yourselves. Social media marketing may seem relatively harmless and quaint, but there are oh so many ways it can all go wrong.
If we’re being honest this is arguably the case for anyone in a customer-facing role, but the faceless and large-scale nature of social media makes it a touch easier to go sideways without realizing it.
Given how easy it can be to become the next social media fail story, let’s educate ourselves about how NOT to behave on social media. Because no one wants to be the next Amy’s Baking Company.

The Sound Of Victory Against An Army Of LawBreakers ~Olusegun Adegbenro

At the start of this week as events unfold itself, as the conversation ensues beyond mythical stick of silence of Nigerians, the thought of President Muhammed Buhari doing this for the soul of Nigeria glides over and over. At first, during his electioneering campaign, I use to believe the worm of corruption is more than bespectacled and cannot be cut open by anyone except holy Jesus. Gore Vidal words will not navigate the thought when he says "By the time a man gets to be presidential material, he has been bought several times over".  Until this growing activities of EFCC, anti graft agencies, members of DSS, Nigerian Army, and other true advocate of change decided to show up Mr President body language is totally against these thieves.

Nigeria is faced by reveling conversations that won't go away since the inception of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. #Ekitigate #BringBackOurBudget #PartyKickingagainstNassPolitics #BudgetPadding #FuelScarcity #PowerScarcity #AntiCorruptionCrusade

60 Seconds to Success: How to Use Instagram's New 60-Second Video Option

Instagram certainly rocked the social marketing boat these last couple of weeks with their announcement that your feed will soon be curated by an algorithm instead of by which accounts you follow and when they upload. Suddenly, everyone was drowning in requests to “turn on notifications if you still want to see my posts”, which mostly resulted in an unpleasant barrage of notifications on your phone. In the panic, Instagram cautioned everyone to calm down, that testing phase isn’t over yet, and an official rollout won’t happen for months.
But on the heels of that announcement came Instagram’s video play. Previously, their videos for regular users were limited to 15 seconds. Now, a wide rollout is planned for 60-second videos. Why the big jump? Well, people are watching a whole lot more video, for one. Engadget reports that the number of people watching video on Instagram jumped 40% in the last six months.

The 4 Key Team Members You Need to Achieve Content Marketing Success

It wasn’t too long ago that marketing your business online all by yourself, using just a few minutes of free time you shaved from your lunch break each day, seemed feasible. Even just a few years ago, creating content felt like a fairly simple processmaintain a blog, update it regularly with a quick post or two, and you’re all set to generate leads. Maybe, if you’re really ambitious, run a social media account or two. Now? Not so much.
The challenges of building a brand online have rapidly grown in a very short period of time. People across the business world have quickly latched onto the idea that “content is king,” and it hasn’t taken long for content marketing to become a massive field with a lot of voices, all of them desperately crying out to be heard.

Argentina and Barcelona star Lionel Messi remains the world’s highest paid footballer with an annual income of 74 million euros ($84.3 million, £59.3 million), according to a report set to appear in Tuesday’s edition of France Football magazine.
Messi’s earnings in 2015 rose by nine million euros compared to the previous figures, keeping the five-time Ballon d’Or winner ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo (67.4m euros) and Neymar (43.5m euros) as the top three stayed unchanged for the third year running.
France Football’s estimates were based on players’ pre-tax salaries, sponsorship revenues and various bonuses, it added.
Angel Di Maria was the top-earning player in France with 24 million euros following his off-season move from Manchester United, with the Argentine narrowly ahead of Paris Saint-Germain team-mates Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
However, figures in France only accounted for player wages and contract bonuses, according to the report.
Despite his sacking from Chelsea in December, Jose Mourinho was the highest earning coach on 24 million euros, with Pep Guardiola and Fabio Capello rounding out the top three.

Photos: At The Maiden Social Media Clinic In Lagos

Information was always reckoned as power and will continue to be so. However the tables have now turned in favor of media consumers. As the trends reflect, it will now be the people's turn to be empowered, as Media will be more and more people-centric. Media probably will have no choice but to take up issues concerning the common man, to survive in a highly competitive world with fleeting viewer/reader loyalties. This was the lesson learnt at the maiden edition of Social Media Clinic powered by Social Media Solutions under the leadership of Mr. Sunday Dare, (an award-winning investigative reporter, multi-media journalist, media trainer, academic researcher). The event took place at Bogobiri Art House, Ikoyi, Lagos. The theme of the Program was titled ''For Every Right; There Is A Responsibility.
There is no gainsaying the fact that it is mass media that have truly globalized the human race - creating a seamless world that transcends artificial barriers of geography and economic, political and social divide. Media have empowered people like nothing else. The Internet provides the knowledge of the entire world at the touch of a button.

The story of Regoe Alfredo Durugo popularly called Mama Makoko.

Mama Makoko with children of Makoko slum PHOTO: Women of Rubies
Nigeria abounds with the story of unknown and unsung women making impact and creating change in their respective communities and spheres of influence. With little or no resources, they are taking the initiatives to illuminate the lives of others despite being engulfed in darkness. This is what women of rubies is about. It’s about telling the tales of unsung Nigerian heroines.
Today, we bring to you the story of Regoe Alfredo Durugo popularly called Mama Makoko. This woman with a heart of gold goes from house to house in Makoko community, a slum located in Lagos recruiting less privileged children to get an education. Every day she paddles her canoe with stubborn determination, taking children who hitherto are uneducated and illuminating their minds with formal education. For more than 25 years, she has been able to send more than 5000 children to school in the riverine Makoko converting the townhall into a makeshift classroom, employing and paying young teachers with the little she makes from her catering job. Going to Makoko wasn’t an easy journey, but Easy Taxi made it convenient and comfortable

This is her story!
I came into this community called Oko Agbon for evangelism not with the intention to educate the children. When I got here, I realized the level of education here is poor; this made me decide to start teaching these kids. This was around 1990. I have made some previous mistakes, I did not start here, I started in Bariga waterfront that was 1987, before I moved to this place. Getting here, I realized they need me here because the problems were just too much. As a result of my work, I get called different names like Mama Makoko, the light of Makoko, Mama Yaba, and Mama Nigeria.

Good Friday 2016

Today is Good Friday, when Christians mark the passion and death of Jesus Christ by crucifixion, outside the walls of the old city of Jerusalem. On this day in history, the crucifixion of Jesus on the cross of Calvary represented the partial fulfillment of the prophesies of old, and his own predictions, regarding the salvation of the world that is to be wrought through the suffering and death of an innocent “Servant of God,” otherwise called the Messiah. The resurrection event that would follow was to complete this prophecy.

Ten reasons why people love social media Apps

PHOTO:growingsocialmedia
While technology continues to shrink the whole world, making it a global village, the influence of social media on people is very clear.
Given the level of interaction in the social media among people, the question is no more how many people use social media but why.
Apparently, most of us use social to stay in touch with pals and keep up with the happenings in our world. Others simply market their business through social platforms. But really, why is everyone so hooked on Facebook, Whatsapp, Palmchat, Twitter or any other social app out there?

E-commerce
When you’re an entrepreneur and you have a product to sell, do well to get on social media. Good marketers have proven that conversation on social apps can truly drive business if you’re saying the right thing at the right time.
For instance, Palmchat 5.1.4 have enterprise handles were e-commerce stores like Konga.com, Goal.com and Jumia.com can interact with their customers to drive business and strengthen customer loyalty.

Trump, Clinton keep edge with Arizona wins

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton
Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton won their parties’ primaries in Arizona on Tuesday and maintained steep advantages in the presidential nominations race, despite victories by rivals in other states.
Trump extended his lead over nearest rival Ted Cruz in the all-important delegate race, although the arch-conservative senator from Texas made a night of it by resoundingly winning the Utah caucuses.
Clinton’s challenger Bernie Sanders, whose grass-roots campaign has refused to yield to the former secretary of state, snatched much-needed victories in Utah and Idaho, blunting Clinton’s momentum just as she began to project an image as the inevitable Democratic nominee.

How Social Media is gradually swallowing Journalism ~ Olajuwon Obalola

Social media hasn’t just swallowed journalism, it has swallowed everything. It has swallowed political campaigns, banking systems, personal histories, the leisure industry, retail, even government and security. The phone in our pocket is our portal to the world.

The Internet and the social web enable journalists to do powerful work, whilst at the same time contributing towards making publishing journalism an uneconomic venture.

ANALYSIS: Bye-Bye Oliseh. Who is next in line for the NFF abattoir? By Jide Alaka

We always knew that this marriage was held together, at best by cello tape and that at the first sign of friction, it would come apart easily.
We have been proven to be right but how the eggheads did not see this situation developing is a topic for another day. This was always going to happen when the two parties chose not to be sincere in their dealings with each the other.
