Recent political appointments, immoral and politically immature - Itse Sagay

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Prof. Itse Sagay, has described the recent political appointments by President Goodluck Jonathan as immoral and politically immature.

He said Jonathan was merely setting traps for his successor, Muhammadu Buhari.

Sagay said such behaviour was averse to democratic norms and practices worldwide.

Boko Haram recordings recovered

The Director, Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade, has confirmed that troops of the Nigerian Army have recovered video recordings of the heinous acts perpetrated by the Boko Haram insurgents.
 
However, Olukolade refused to disclose further information about the crimes against humanity captured in the videos in possession of the military.

Imoke denies becoming the next National Chairman of PDP.

Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke has denied reports that he is interested in taking over the position of the National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, which is currently occupied by Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu.
 
Imoke, who spoke with journalists on Friday at the Margaret Ekpo International Airport in Calabar, said he would stay from public office after May 29 handover and remain a firm member of the party.

Gunmen abduct ex-medical director, wife

Kidnappers again struck in Ado Ekiti on Thursday, abducting a former Chief Medical Director of Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Dr. Patrick Adegun, and his wife, Kikelomo.
 
The duo were kidnapped five days after a senior nurse with the Federal Medical Centre, Ido Ekiti, Mrs Margaret Aladeneka, was abducted while a yet-to-be-identified man was killed during the operation.

Obasanjo Foundation fired Anne Welsh

The Olusegun Obasanjo Foundation on Friday said it has fired a member of its Board of Trustees, Anne Welsh, following shocking reports that she plotted to help some Lebanese businessmen to launder millions of dollars.

A new video obtained by SaharaReporters and published Thursday suggested Mrs. Welsh “operated a well-oiled money-laundering scheme for many years”.

The All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State has said the conspiracy between labour union leaders and Governor Ayodele Fayose won’t stop the impeachment proceedings, if the lawmakers wanted to carry out their constitutional duties.
 
The party said it was vindicated over the alarm it raised that the state labour leaders had conspired with Governor Ayodele Fayose to help stall his impeachment by the House of Assembly.

Police promote 632 senior officers

The Police Service Commission has approved the promotion of 632 senior Police Officers in line with its constitutional mandate.

Four hundred and sixty officers  were promoted from the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police,  to the next rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police,  while 172 officers  on the rank of DSP were elevated to the rank of Superintendent of Police.

British singer, Elton John has said that AIDS can be eradicated in this lifetime but with more funding.

John made this known while speaking at a Senate hearing that is considering funding for the US's global Aids programme.

I was amused to read the story in the Punch of May 7, 2015, where the former Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Leke Pitan, tried to subtly mend fences with his party, the All Progressives Congress. Maybe the intention was not only to mend fences but to position himself as a loyal party member as the party leadership considers individuals for the many openings for political appointments available to the APC.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday congratulated Prime Minister David Cameron and the Conservative Party of Great Britain on their victory in the country’s general elections.

The congratulatory message was contained in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati.

Student, other die in Imo hotel

Residents of Edede, Owerri in Imo State, on Friday, woke up to hear the news of the mysterious death of two male staff members of Home Best Hotel, who passed away in their sleep in the same room in the hotel.

An eyewitness, who narrated the incident to our correspondent, said one of the deceased, Chima Nnadi , 25, a part-time student of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri, who hails from Enyiogugu, Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, put off a generating set that was running close to their room at about 11.39pm.

'Sly' Ojigbede finally buried

Sly, who was the host of the ‘Morning Show’ and Saturday morning show ‘Saturday Express’, was buried this afternoon at Ikoyi Cemetery.




Sly passed away on Sunday the 3rd of May after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife and and children. May his soul rest in peace.

Taoiseach's message

David Cameron has been congratulated by Irish premier Enda Kenny, who has sent a message to the Conservative leader expressing hope that they could "build on our very close relationship and... continue our work on sustaining and developing the strong and positive relationship that exists between our two countries".

The Taoiseach also praised the 18 MPs elected across the border in Northern Ireland. Mr Kenny faces his own election within the next 11 months.

The Conservatives made gains in England and Wales and are forecast by the BBC to secure 331 seats in the Commons, giving them a slender majority.

Miss Black has set a rare record by winning in the general elections to become a Member of Parliament. First she is female and then she is the youngest candidate in the UK in over three hundred years to win an election.

APC Youths Denounce Ojudu Over Ekiti Impeachment Plans

Youths aligned to the All Progressives Congress (APC) have accused Senator Babafemi Ojudu, representing Ekiti Central senatorial district, of fueling the crisis in the state by planning the impeachment of Governor Ayodele Fayose.

The youth, under the aegis of Ekiti APC Youths Congress (EAYC), alleged  Ojudu recruited people from Lagos to speak in his defence in his roles in the current impeachment move against governor Fayose.

Juncker 'ready to work' with Cameron


European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has issued a statement saying he "stands ready to work constructively" with the incoming Conservative government.

Congratulating David Cameron, who had publicly opposed Mr Juncker's candidacy, on the election result, the former Luxembourg PM reaffirmed that he wants a "fair deal with Britain" and that the Commission will "examine in a very polite, friendly and objective way" any "proposals, ideas or requests" that the UK may put forward.

Mr Cameron says he will demand EU reforms ahead of an In/Out referendum in 2017.

Ngige denies rancour in APC

Senator Chris Ngige on Thursday in Abuja denied reports that issues of power sharing was threatening the stability of the All Progressives Congress in the South-East.

He said it was untrue that the Igbos were divided over the position of the Secretary General of the Federation.

Ngige made this known while interacting with newsmen at the sidelines of the visit of a delegation of Ohaneze Ndigbo to the President-elect, retired Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.

BREAKING: Pakistan helicopter carrying foreign diplomats crashes

A Pakistani military helicopter carrying foreign diplomats in the mountainous region of Gilgit-Baltistan has crashed, killing six people, the military says.

The dead included two ambassadors, two wives of ambassadors and the helicopter’s two Pakistani pilots.

The dead include Norwegian Ambassador Leif Larsen, Philippines Ambassador Domingo Lucenario Jr, and the wives of the Malaysian and Indonesian ambassadors to Pakistan.
