Sanusi visits el-Rufai, says Kaduna chose competent leader

Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, said on Saturday in Kaduna that for electing a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Malam Nasir el-Rufai, the people of the state had chosen a competent leader.

Sanusi led the Kano Emirate Council to congratulate el-Rufai, who he described as “competent and capable” on his victory at the April 11 governorship election in the state.

Aboutrika’s assets seized

Egyptian authorities have seized share certificates belonging to former football star Mohamed Aboutrika after allegations that a company he founded funded the blacklisted Muslim Brotherhood, judicial officials said.

The move against one of the country’s most successful sports stars comes amid a crackdown on members and supporters of the movement since July 2013, when the army ousted president Mohamed Morsi , Egypt’s first freely-elected leader.

30 killed in Iraq jail break

Up to 30 people were killed when the Iraqi security forces thwarted a jail-break of more than 150 detainees held for terrorism charges in Iraq’s eastern province of Diyala, a provincial security source said on Saturday.

The attempt started when a group of detainees took the gun of a guard during his tour late on Friday night in the jail of the police headquarters in the city of Khalis, just west of the provincial capital city of Baquba, some 65 km northeast of Baghdad, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Buhari’s ministers, lawmakers to get N9bn housing, furniture allowance

Senators and members of the House of Representatives that will constitute the 8th National Assembly and ministers to be appointed by President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), will on assumption of office receive welcome perks amounting to N9bn.

The perks of office include the housing allowance which each of the incoming office holder is entitled to receive once a year, the furniture allowance which they are entitled to once in four years and motor vehicle loan which they are entitled to once in their tenure.

The perks are some of the non-regular allowances that the political office holders are entitled to as prescribed by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission.
